Office Upgrade with Fresh Control

Overview

Norvent undertook a phased replacement of the air handling units (AHUs) at 1 Redcliff Street Offices in Bristol. The building, formerly known as the Robinson Building, is a modernist high-rise originally constructed in 1964 as the headquarters of E. S. & A. Robinson, a local paper and packaging manufacturer that had operated on the site since 1846.

Working within this established commercial building, the project was designed to modernise the ventilation infrastructure, improve overall energy efficiency, and enhance system control. All works were carefully phased to maintain full operational continuity for tenants throughout the upgrade.

Challenges

• Maintaining normal building operation while replacing critical ventilation plant.
• Coordinating works across multiple floors and plant areas within a live office environment.
• Integrating new equipment and controls with the existing building infrastructure.

Solutions

• Completed asbestos refurbishment and demolition (R&D) surveys ahead of works to ensure safe delivery.
• Supplied and installed three new Daikin air handling units, including associated new ductwork to suit the upgraded systems.
• Designed and installed a bespoke Building Management System (BMS), tailored specifically to the system design rather than using an off-the-shelf solution.
• Integrated the new BMS with enhanced functionality, including CO₂ monitoring and modulating dampers to provide improved floor-level environmental control.
• Fully rebalanced and recommissioned all systems to ensure optimal performance and efficiency.

Results

The completed upgrade has delivered improved indoor air quality, increased system reliability, and greater control flexibility across the office floors. The bespoke BMS solution provides more responsive management of the building environment, supporting both occupant comfort and long-term operational efficiency.
